Worksheet for KS3/GCSE students studying combustion and air pollution from burning fuels.
Used for students to fill in during/after a demonstration of testing combustion products using the u-tube apparatus where anhydrous copper(II) sulphate proves the presence of water and limewater proves the presence of carbon dioxide, and a discussion about the different appearances of the flame when a Bunsen burner has the air hole open compared to closed.
The table to fill in is designed as a group task where students analyse information (freely available on the BBC Bitesize website) about the different types of pollution, how they are formed when fuels are burned, and the problems they cause. This could be easily differentiated by varying the types and amounts of information given to the groups. An extension question at the end of the sheet encourages higher ability students to find out about alternative fuels and how they might reduce emissions of the pollutants studied.
