This resource provides a clear “I do, You do” structure for teaching problems involving the mean (average). Students work through examples involving changes to a mean when new data is added.
The first problem asks students to calculate how many goals a football team scored in a tenth game after the mean number of goals changes from 2 to 2.5. The second asks students to calculate how much the mean increases when a 25th student, who scores 19, is added to a class of 24 students with a mean score of 15.
The resource includes structured spaces for working out the original total, new total, additional value and resulting mean, helping students develop a systematic approach to these problems.
A useful teacher-led modelling and guided practice resource for developing students’ understanding of how the mean changes when new data is added.
