Use expanded noun phrases (2A Sentences) to add detail, qualification and precision:
The mansion -> The grand, old mansion with towering chimneys.

Create atmosphere/images by using a range of language:
Similes - The road meandered like a serpent. - use like or as
Metaphors - The moon was a ghostly galleon. - compare without like or as
Personification - The wind whispered their fate. - give human features
Alliteration - Slithering serpents. Indigo igloos. - first letter repetition
Onomatopoeia - Crash! Bang! Whoosh! - word sounds like the sound!
