A code breaker puzzle on estimating calculations. Students round every number to 1 significant figure, work out the estimate, then look the answer up in the Code Box to unlock a letter. The thirteen letters unscramble to the name of a footballer.
The thirteen calculations start with simple products and divisions such as 4.8 x 21.3 and 792 / 4.1, then move on to a square, fractions with a calculation on top, and dividing by numbers less than 1, such as 87 / 0.52 and a fraction with 0.48 underneath.
The Code Box includes deliberate traps. Students who halve instead of dividing by 0.5 land on 45 or 90, and anyone who doubles 6 instead of squaring it gets 12. Each of these unlocks a letter that is not in the answer, so the mistake shows up when the letters will not unscramble.
Answers are included as a separate file. Two copies per A4.
Suitable for GCSE Foundation (AQA N14) and for Key Stage 3 classes working on estimation.
