This IB Maths AI SL 5.5 – Anti-differentiation (Student Notes) resource introduces students to the fundamental ideas behind anti-derivatives and definite integrals. The notes build on prior understanding of inverse functions to show how anti-differentiation “undoes” differentiation, developing the concept of a family of functions whose derivative matches a given expression. Core notation and meaning are presented clearly, with emphasis on the constant of integration and its significance.

Students learn the basic anti-differentiation rule for powers of (x), including restrictions and reminders about the constant C. Guided practice links differential equations of the form dy/dx to finding general solutions and then using initial conditions to determine specific functions. The notes also introduce the definite integral as the area under a curve, supported by a visual diagram showing signed area between (x=a) and (x=b).

(Note: The student + teacher notes are free! Thanks for your support. Consider purchasing the IB Math AI 5.5 - Anti-differentiation PPT to supplement these. Feel free to share this link, and don’t forget to leave a 5-star review if you found these helpful.)
