Worksheet based on the song "Il avait les mots" by Sheryfa Luna - pupils have to fill in the missing verbs with the correct conjugation in the perfect or imperfect tense. I took a few liberties with rearranging word order to simplify things where an adverb came between the auxiliary and past participle! There is a nice mix of the two tenses, including irregular verbs, so it's quite challenging. There are also a lot of object pronouns in the song, so this could be an alternative exercise to do with it.

I told them which verbs and tenses to use as I didn't think it would be possible to work this out from the context, but after filling in the gaps I asked the pupils to explain why that tense had been used in each case. An alternative exercise would be to provide pupils with an English translation and then get them to decide whether the verbs should be in the perfect or imperfect tense.

Because the song and video leaves the story unfinished (which really annoyed my Y12s - "aw, Miss, I thought she was going to murder him or something!" said one of them, disappointed), I then got pupils to write a final verse describing what happened next. They could continue to do this in the past tense, or if you wanted to practise the future tense they could do it like a prediction instead.
If you do this as part of the relationships topic, you could extend this over several lessons - get pupils to describe one or more of the people involved and what their relationship is/was like, make predictions for the future, give advice to the characters, write a magazine piece about it, roleplay the police interview, and so on.
