While this was used specifically for the book Homecoming, the first clue could be adjusted to spell out any relevant character or teacher (the thief).

I used this as a 20-minute interview lesson on grammar with 34 Year 4/5 pupils. My feedback was that it was a lovely lesson, the children were engaged and on-task but they didn't want to give me an unruly class in my first year of teaching that might break me behaviour-wise.

I found-out that the class was reading Michael Morpurgo's Homecoming so I created this grammar mystery around the novel. I told the class that someone from their class novel had stolen something and hidden it in the classroom. By circling in clue #1 the nouns and using the first letter of each noun it would tell them who it was, by circling the adjectives in clue #2 it would tell them what was hidden, and clue #3 would tell them where in the classroom to find it.

ANSWERS: Bennie the Thug, Lemon Sherbets, Desk Drawer.

The third clue could be used more generally, but the first one to two clues would need to be adapted for use without the novel.

I created differentiation 4 ways as there was a student with global developmental delay with a 1:1 who I planned separately for. As this was a 20-minute lesson I had children start on different clues so that by the end of 8-10 minutes we would have all 3 clues to put together. Most children finished 1-2 clues in that time-frame.

With more time I would have loved to do a Sherlock Holmes video using the photo-speak app to address the class and tell them he has sent his double-agent (me) to help them.
