This Powerpoint and worksheet introduces the structure of flowers, and the functions of male and female parts of the flower at a level suitable for KS3 science students.

The lesson comes with a starter, diagram print-out (with option for scaffolding), and instructions and worksheet for dissection. It can be used as part of a unit on plant biology, the lifecycle of plants or plant reproduction.

The dissection worksheet introduces students to how to draw scientific diagrams, as needed for the Cambridge iGCSE Biology specification. Large flowers such as lilies will suit this lesson best, but PPT slides can be adapted to reflect dissections of other flowers.

This material covers the following specification point from the UK KS3 science curriculum:

  • reproduction in plants, including flower structure, wind and insect pollination, fertilisation, seed and fruit formation and dispersal, including quantitative investigation of some dispersal mechanisms
