A 22 Lesson SOW that explores key themes and events in 'Of Mice and Men', with a particular focus on learning to analyse figurative language. By the end of this SOW, students should learn to analyse similes, metaphors, personification, the influence of contextual factors and how to write up their ideas in PETAL paragraphs.
It is designed for KS3 groups, to fill in a lot of the gaps that I'm noticing in students analysis (particularly students who can identify techniques but cannot explain what the author is suggesting beyond the obvious or cannot explain how they got to that understanding). I've moved on from sentence starters, so there are frequent analysis questions throughout this unit, in order to help students develop the appropriate thought processes to enable them to express their ideas. This works particularly well with weaker students, who do not make the same intuitive leaps that our own brains make as teachers of English. There are also three debate lessons to take advantage of that post-assessment lull, where students get a chance to really engage with some of the issues in this text (it is all centred around the question of whether murder can ever be justified).

All lessons are designed as 55 minute lessons. All lesson ppts start with a slide breaking down the activities by the recommended time, in order to complete the lesson. There are two assessments, in case you want to give one to students as a practice 'decoy' assessment.

The resources are provided as word documents, so that you can adjust them if necessary
All slides contain a ridiculous amount of colours and images, in order to make everything accessible for a variety of learners. (I am fairly fanatical about lessons being visually appealing, as well as covering interesting topics.)

There is a 'Key Vocabulary list' with essential and advanced words in order to challenge all students. There is also a lesson map, so you can quickly keep track of which lesson you are on and the main skills that they are working on.
