Summary of passage

Kwame Nkrumah was a key figure in Ghana’s history, born in 1909. He was passionate about education and desired to help his country. After studying in the United States, Nkrumah became aware of the struggles faced by African Americans and felt that Ghana deserved freedom and independence. Returning to Ghana, he joined the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) and later formed his own political party, the Convention People’s Party (CPP), to fight for Ghana’s independence. In 1957, Ghana became the first African country to gain independence, with Nkrumah as Prime Minister. He worked diligently to improve the lives of Ghanaians and also formed the Organization of African Unity (OAU) to unite African countries. However, not everyone agreed with Nkrumah’s leadership, leading to a military coup in 1966 and his subsequent exile until his death in 1972. Despite the challenges he faced, Nkrumah’s legacy endures as a leader who fought for independence and unity in Africa.
