Landscapes – Time & Place

This is an IB MYP unit of work that can be taught during a single semester. The naming of tasks can be easily changed to meet the criteria of any national or international curriculum.

The aim of the unit is for students to engage and explore the changing environments they inhabit and produce an oil painting response.

The unit moves through various stages of exploration and experiments to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to meet the intentions of the unit outcome. The project begins with an introduction to traditional drawing skills and the fundamentals of creating an illusion of space and concludes with the production of an oil painting.

Stages of the unit:

  1. Perspective drawing (One, two and three points)
  2. Traditional drawing techniques
  3. Mark-based drawing in several media
  4. Exploration of artistic drawing styles
  5. Creating unique compositions
  6. Responding to the artwork of others
  7. Producing personal compositions using original primary sources
  8. Mixed media outcomes
  9. Griding, scale and drawing accuracy
  10. Watercolor painting
  11. Oil painting techniques
  12. Painting proposal
  13. Oil painting outcome
