This resource contains a step by step planning process to writing a story using an area local to your students. This is suitable for Year 8-10 students who need to learn/refresh their creative writing skills. It was developed in preparation for the iGCSE English language exam, however, would be suitable for any other exams requiring students to write creatively.
The first 2 pages contain instructions on how to develop your setting and provides two different local areas (Google Maps) as a visual aid. The use of local settings allows the students to use facts from the sites to help them in their descriptions, rather than having to create a setting from scratch. The next page contains prompts to help them construct their character, the atmosphere and the plot. These can be used as absolutes or as a springboard for other ideas which might spark in your student’s mind. The final page provides a planning scaffold, which you can opt out of if you feel your students don’t need it, before asking them to use all these elements to write their story.
This whole pack could be delivered over 3-4 lessons.
