Area, Pythagoras' Theorem
Key Stage: 4 ★★

If you know the area of the blue square inscribed in a circle, can you work out the area of the yellow square?

This problem could work well as a 'poster' - a visual challenge placed where students will see it. Or presented at the end of a lesson as something to try to solve. This problem uses Pythagoras' theorem without asking for it explicitly, and extends to many similar problems.

This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.
