This complete lesson has been fully differentiated to be taught to all abilities and includes the following topics and activities:

  • An AfL style starter activity (to assess prior knowledge), asking the students to give ways citizens can participate in the UK’s democracy that they are already aware of.
  • Teaching the students on the two types of barrier to democracy (legal and emotional).
  • Using data to show the students the link between the barriers to democracy and voter turnout by comparing the UK to other countries.
  • A video activity on why young people specifically not engaged in the UK’s democracy.
  • Teaching the students what the various opportunities to democracy that there are in the UK and questioning them on how effective each method is about bringing change in society.
  • An 8 mark GCSE practice question on opportunities and barriers to democracy
  • A homework task asking students to research pressure groups in lieu of the next lesson in the module.
