This resource focuses on x13 prepositions:

Learners place a dumper truck in the correct position according to each preposition word label at the top (above) each rocky pit/scene image.

Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for children in the early years (depending on understanding/ability), years 1 and 2 as well as older learners needing to revisit/explore these prepositions further.

Preparation
Print out the set of x15 sheets. Laminate ‘scene sheets’ (pages 2-14) as well as the ‘Answers’ sheet (optional) on page 15. Cut up the dumper trucks on page 1, then laminate. Separate dumper trucks, ensuring corners are cut ‘rounded’ (so are smooth). Add a small dot of blue tac to the back of each dumper truck card.

How to use this resource
Place laminated sheets (pages 2-14) with cut out and laminated dumper truck images and place together on a table top/carpet for learners to access. Learners take a dumper truck image and place in the correct position as the preposition word label above each image indicates.

Answers (page 15)
Answers are provided as a ‘guide’, however these may vary for some prepositions, e.g. ‘beside’ can be ‘either’ side. Your learner/s should be encouraged to explain their thinking.

This Answer sheet can also be laminated and made available to learners to check their own learning once the activity (placing one dumper truck on each scene sheet), encouraging autonomy.

Suggestion
A tiny ball of blue tac could be secured to the back of each dumper truck image to keep learners placement in position once they have completed this activity.

Giving learners access to a toy dumper truck with a ‘pit’ to place the dumper trucks down and inside of (as well as outside, above, next to etc), is recommended to explore before working on this activity. Having access to these real objects should help make clear how an object (dumper truck) looks when placed e.g. ‘in’ a rocky pit (scene), ready to complete this activity.
