Children sort a set of picture cards into the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. The images show familiar features such as weather, clothing, plants and activities.

Children can work independently or with a partner to discuss where each card belongs. Encourage them to talk about their choices using simple sentence stems such as “I think this is ___ because…”

This activity supports children to:

recognise and name the four seasons
observe and describe seasonal changes
develop vocabulary linked to weather and nature
practise speaking and reasoning skills through discussion

You can extend the activity by:

asking children to explain their thinking to a partner
sorting by months as well as images
adding a challenge to spot any “tricky” cards that could fit more than one season

Ideal as a hands-on, talk-rich enhancement for enhanced provision.
