Secret Decoder (CVC, CCVC & CVCC)

Secret Decoder is a fun and engaging literacy activity designed to help students practice early reading and spelling skills through an exciting “secret message” decoding game.

This resource includes an alphabet spinner wheel featuring the full alphabet, where each letter is linked to a number. The spinner is best cut out and laminated, making it a durable and reusable classroom tool that can be used again and again.

Along with the spinner, the pack includes 7 decoding worksheets, carefully differentiated by phonics level:

3 CVC word worksheets (van,cat,leg/bus,jam,dog/egg,lip,ant)
2 CCVC word worksheets (crab,flag,drop/frog,swim,drum)
2 CVCC word worksheets (milk,sand,nest/tent,hand,lamp)

On each worksheet, students will find blank lines to complete a word, with numbers written underneath each space. Their task is to use the spinner to match each number to its corresponding letter, write the letter in the correct place, and gradually decode the entire word.

Once the full word has been decoded and read, students will then use the box provided to draw a picture of the decoded word, reinforcing comprehension and vocabulary in a creative way.

The numbers are also presented using Montessori-inspired place value colours:
tens in red
ones in blue
helping students develop number recognition and visual place value awareness.
