Sound Baskets!

We are going to gather small items around the classroom and playground that begin with the phonic sound we are learning in class.
We can also pick objects that have that phonic sound in the word name. Some items can be applied to more than 1 sound.
Big items will need to be drawn by your young learners and added to the ‘sound basket’ as they are far too big and possibly dangerous to fit in a basket. Items like chairs and tables that can be seen in the classroom could be drawn instead.
If you or your young learners are struggling to find items for a particular sound, you can gather items by colour like green things/yellow things; so, on and so on.
Either way the sound labelled baskets can serve as a visual representation of the sounds being covered in class. By choosing items that are already in the classroom (maybe for years) or in the playground it makes the exercise easier and more engaging for your young learners. Your young learners may wish to bring items from home to add to the classroom ‘sound baskets’ or alternatively they could make their own at home.
The baskets can be taken out for sound reviewal exercises on a regular basis and/or students could explore the ‘sound baskets’ further during their free play time. The ‘sound baskets’ could be prepared in advance by you before you teach the new sound and then introduced to your young learners as you are giving them an example of words to associate the new sound with.
