AQA GCSE English Language Paper 1 Question 3 structure workbook with model answers, teacher notes and two exam-style practice questions, written for the 2026 question format.

Question 3 is where students lose the most marks for the least reason: they retell the plot, drift into language analysis or name a feature and stop. This 19-page workbook fixes that. Students learn to ask one question about every structural choice, “why here?”, and to link each point to the named effect, which the 2026 papers now require.

What’s included

  • 19-page student workbook (print and teach, no slides needed)
  • Answers, annotated model answers and teacher notes (7 pages)

How it builds the skill

See it: two versions of the same story show what structure does before any terms are taught
Name it: nine structural moves (opening, time shift, ending, zoom, shift in focus, pace, withholding, turning point, echo), plus a structure-or-language sorting task
Track it: follow the focus paragraph by paragraph, plot a tension graph, find the turning point
Write it: a four-step paragraph method (where, what, why there, so), four answers to put in order from Level 1 to Level 4, and a weak paragraph to upgrade
Do it: a guided practice question (unease) and an independent practice question (anticipation), with planning grids and a self-check

Model answers
Level 3 (grade 5) and Level 4 (grade 8) responses, with examiner comments beside every paragraph, plus full answers to all eight activities.

Perfect for: Year 10 and 11 English, GCSE resit and post-16 groups, intervention, revision, cover lessons, homework and tutoring.

Written by an experienced English Language examiner.
