Here is a story of disaster and rescue. It can be used as an interest story; a piece of colonial transport history; a consequence of erosional forces or a link with the geomorphology of coasts. Follow the passage of the Loch Ard clipper ship from England to the dangerous coastline of colonial Victoria. Understand how and why the ship became endangered. Follow the consequences on board the sinking ship and understand how this event is recorded in the names of the gorge and the two survivors. As a summary activity your students can engage in the inquest to determine the cause of this tragedy. You could search for the actual Inquest details and check the summary findings against the record. Use the maps, the photographs and the etching to focus on this tragedy which occurred during Australia’s colonial period.
