Dear Reader,

This lesson is part of a 10-lesson unit on Norman control of England and focuses on how William I gathered economic and political information about his new kingdom through the Domesday Survey. The lesson encourages students to combine secure factual knowledge with original source material, while steadily developing their historical explanation and written argument skills.

All lessons in this unit follow the same clear, consistent structure, helping students understand where they are in their learning and build confidence lesson by lesson.

Learning Objectives:
To describe what the Domesday Survey was and when it took place.
To explain how the survey worked and why it was useful to William I.
To assess which system was more effective in helping William maintain control of England: the Domesday Book or the Feudal System.

The lesson includes three differentiated tasks:
The first two tasks are group- or class-assessed, supporting discussion, shared thinking and retrieval of key knowledge.
The final task is an independent written answer, structured around the GCSE writing framework, allowing the teacher to circulate and provide targeted one-to-one support.

The lesson is fully prepared as a slideshow.
