Do your students struggle to use transition words/text connectives well in their writing? We found our students tended to repeat the same words at the start of their sentences, which made their writing repetitive and a bit dull.

However when searching for teaching resources to help with this, we found that lots of lesson activities provided a long list of transition words. This can be a bit overwhelming for students in terms of deciding which transition words are best for a particular style of writing. Therefore this pack suggests 12 persuasive transition words you could use for persuasive writing, 12 informational transition words appropriate for information reports and 12 narrative transition words for engaging story writing.

In this pack we have provided:

1. a transition word student handout,

2. transition word wall cards for displaying on your classroom wall,

3. cloze activities whereby students have to decide the best transition words to fill in the gaps in persuasive, narrative and informational writing samples.

4. a writing fix-up activity, whereby students are given samples of boring persuasive, narrative and informational writing, where the same words have been repeated at the start of each sentence. Using the transition words lists provided, students re-write these samples using a variety of transition words.

We hope that you find this pack challenges your students to produce more lively and engaging writing, through guiding them on how transition words can be used effectively for different styles of writing.
