This is a groupwork based lesson, focussed on the different zones of land use and identifying factors of a preferred site/settlement for members of the Griffin family.

The lesson includes:

  1. ‘Odd one out’ Starter Activity
  2. Considering multiple settlement requirements from varied perspectives.
  3. Site info handout and accompanying DME matrix.
  4. An extended writing task, centred around creating a report/ email/ leaflet etc, which could be a homework project/ peer assessment opportunity. A Success Criteria / Feedback sheet is paired with this.
  5. Stretch and challenge opportunities throughout, sentence starters and WAGOLLS.

It is designed for a KS3 class as part of a Settlement/ Urban Environment unit and is preceeded by lessons covering site/ settlement factors, types of settlement and the Burgess/ Hoyt model.

Could also be an opportunity for map skills/ use of IT/ google maps & earth to explore the maps I made and play about with measuring the distances / features etc.

I hope that your students enjoy this lesson and that this can save you some valuable planning time. If you do use this with your students, I’d love to be tagged in your posts to see what you create!
