These writing assessment grids are designed to be used termly for moderating a collection of independent writing tasks.

My year 6 class each have a writing portfolio for the year and any independent writing tasks they have done each term (generally between 3-5 pieces, depending on the child) goes into their portfolio with a termly cover sheet to state what pieces of writing are in there.

I will then highlight each statement on each child’s writing assessment grid using a colour-code system (green/amber/pink) to determine whether they have fully, partially or not at all shown evidence of each statement.

The colour-code system is fully explained at the bottom of each writing assessment grid.

Each column has ‘emerging’, ‘expected’, ‘exceeding’ at the bottom where you can use your judgement to decide which best fits the child you are assessing depending on how much or how little green/amber/pink highlighting they have.

By the end of the year, each child has 3 writing assessment grids in their folder (one per term). The colour-coding system really helps to visually show progression as well as individual gaps/targets,
