This chapter builds the concept of multiplication from the ground up, starting with equal groups (three plates of five biscuits) and showing how the same fact can be written as repeated addition, in words, or as a times fact. Arrays are used throughout so pupils can see why 2 × 5 and 5 × 2 give the same answer, halving what needs to be memorised.

Covers the 2, 5 and 10 times tables in full, with pattern spotting (the 2s are always even, the 5s end in 5 or 0, the 10s end in 0) and strategies such as doubling for the 2s and halving the 10s to find the 5s.

Includes a worked explanation, common misconceptions addressed directly (children often read “×” as “and” or count groups instead of the total), and 30 questions across three sections: warm up, getting stronger and challenge, moving from array-reading to worded reasoning problems.

Answers included, with a star chart for pupils to track progress and a confidence check-in at the end.
