This set of biology vocabulary picture cards can support the learning of content vocabulary in your classroom. They can be used as a word wall, as individual posters, or as flash cards. Two sets are included. One set includes a full 8.5x11 page with the words, pictures and definitions that be displayed on your wall and are big enough for students to see from across the room. One set include smaller flash cards (two to a page) with the picture and word on the front and when printed double sided will include the definition on the back. They can also be printed single sided for creating a matching activity. Sets can be used as a classroom resource or the pdfs can de distributed to students as a study guide. World Religions Unit Plan Bundle (English and Spanish options)

This unit is designed to educate students on the 12 most common religions in the world today through web-based research: Baha’i, Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Shinto, Sikhism, Taoism and Zoroastrianism; while at the same time facilitating the development of opinions on spiritual matters, teaching tolerance, and strengthening student writing through daily prompts and a final creative writing project. A final assessment utilizing student research is provided. There are 16 days of PowerPoint presentations to guide the learning leading up to the creative writing project. Each lesson opens with a higher order thinking question designed to develop opinions and teach tolerance. Questions are presented in Spanish and English, with the option to edit out the Spanish. The file “writing rubric” contains a student friendly rubric based on the WIDA writing rubric which should be used daily to evaluate student writing and allow opportunities for teachers to conference with students on how to move to the next level. Following a period where students write their answers, students should be encouraged to share their answers orally and respond to each other, allowing an opportunity for students to engage in a class discussion around the questions.

tudents will be working collaboratively to research one of four ancient civilizations that have influenced our world today, while building their digital literacy and writing proficiency. Students will present their information to other groups in the form of a slide show using an application such as Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides. Each group will become an expert on one civilization, and will be teaching the other groups about their civilization. Supplemental materials are included if you choose to do a guided small group for Newcomer ELLs or SPED (special education) students who have impairments in the area of reading. A series of PowerPoint presentations to guide research and facilitate discussions through higher-order thinking questions are provided in both Spanish and English. Rubrics are used to help students improve their writing proficiency by responding to daily prompts which facilitate the discussions. Teachers have the option of teaching the unit as a dual-language unit in Spanish and English or as English only. For the English only version, sentence starters are provided to scaffold language for ESOL or SPED students. The unit can be taught in a social studies or language arts class. Covered civilizations include Maya, Inca, Aztec, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece and Mesopotamia. Included in the bundle are daily lesson plans with daily objectives, standards, scaffolded discussion questions, vocabulary and assessment rubrics.

Students will learn about globalization and then will be working collaboratively to research one problem affecting the world on a global scale, while simultaneously developing their writing proficiency. Upon completion of their research, groups will develop and execute and action project the support solving a global problem on a local level. Discussion questions are used to open each lesson, and students are to be given time to write out their answers before sharing their answers as a class discussion. A writing rubric is included, which is a student friendly version of the WIDA writing rubric, which measures proficiency in writing in English. A sentence starter is included with each discussion question to support students who are struggling writings, have special needs or are English language learners. Research will require access to a source for gaining information. The unit plan was designed with intention to be used with National Geographic’s Global Issues series. If that is not available to you I have also included a hyperlinked document where students can find the information they need on each global issue.

The unit plan allows students to learn about the world economy by looking at one region, Central America and the Caribbean Students will be working collaboratively to research one country of Central America or the Caribbean, while building their digital literacy and writing proficiency. Upon completion of their research, groups will create a television advertisement to persuade others to visit their country. Discussion questions are provided in both English and Spanish, to allow the opportunity to have a dual language conversation in your classroom. The Spanish option can be edited out. Research will require access to a source for gaining information. Effective online sources include The World Book Encyclopedia, the Britannica Encyclopedias, or the online tool CultureGrams. If these are not available to you, another online option is Google’s search engine for students, www.safesearchkids.com. You will also need a source for students to create and edit their videos. If iMovie or Windows Movie Maker are not available to you a free online video editing option is WeVideo. If this is not an option students can present their commercial orally instead of on a video.
