A set of short extracts on the topic of feminism from a wide variety of sources (e.g. Mary Wollstonecraft, Helene Cixous, Naomi Woolf, Lady Gaga...) Suggestions for use included inside. Creates an interesting discussion/ thinking points before starting the study of a female writer (in this case, it was Sylvia Plath)

Students research the life of Shakespeare and The Globe (see question list) then write an entertaining dramatic monologue in the voice of the Globe... Instructions included... produces some lovely work.

To understand how texts present an impression or image of their subject Powerpoint should explain all but focuses on conflicting opinions of Bear Grylls- ‘survival’ expert so should be vaguely interesting for those apathetic students!

Identify strategies to compare and contrast two texts and to understand how to evaluate two texts. Easily adaptable activity- I've used two articles about Pamplona bull running - nice and gory.

This resource contains a lesson presentation with the objective: Understand how texts present a viewpoint or attitude about their subject . A scheme of work designed for the OCR AS spec- although 'Wuthering Heights' is off as an exam text from sept 2011, the scheme itself could be adapted for other stuff. There are also resources here that could help!

A detailed revision powerpoint, outlining the AQA modern texts exam (although this could be removed/ changed to fit your board) and lots of slides on context, complete with questions encouraging students to make links to the novel. Final slide suggests they get into groups and come up with essay plans to past exam questions.

Two structured essay plans on 'An Inspector Calls' - could be cut up and offered to the students to organise and/or add quotations to... Then there's a third essay question scaffold for them to fill in themselves. Again, could be adapted and used in lots of creative ways.

Lesson plan and resource uses John Agard's poem, &'Reporting from the Frontline of the Great Dictionary Disaster&';, to teach students about etymology in a fun and engaging way. It also ties in with poems from other cultures. Could be used as a stand-alone 'fun&' lesson, or to tie in with teaching about the origins of the English language. If you have a lively class, you can get a great performance at the end... it also produces some great display work if you get students to type their work up. Enjoy :)

A good way of practising close reading skills.. these resources are: 1. a selection of openings to novels; can be used in a number of ways.. with frameworks to develop close reading skills, dicussion, when beginning a novel with a particular effective opening. 2. powerpoint for reading lesson; memory game starter included and circuit training activity complete with self timer built in- open it to see! 3. extracts to be used in activity explained in powerpoint… works a treat, i promise!

I made my own poetry anthology for Year 8 compiling a selection of poetry focused on setting. Begins with some Romantic stuff then moves on to all sorts - Hughes, Atwood, Nicholls etc etc. Print and give to students - good basis for SOW.

I created a learning objectives sheet/ key vocab and stretch/challenge targets for each act of 'An Inspector Calls'. Good sheets to give students at the beginning of each act- you can return to these as much as you like throughout study...simple...but work well!

Range of stuff- probably more useful for the teacher in the first instance- on The Taming of the Shrew. Taught as comparative text with The Importance of Being Earnest with a focus on gender.

A range of worksheets/activities for some of the texts in the EdExcel English iGCSE anthology for the exam. Texts include Chinese Cinderalla, Climate Change, Explorers or Boys Messing About, and A Passage to Africa. There are also two film articles to discuss compare for unseen non fiction. Fairly straightforward but hopefully useful stuff.

For new iGCSE anthology, nothing existed on this poem so I created it. Copy of poem attached.

Two activities linked to Chapter 10 of Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde'. One is a matching activity for cause and effect. The other is a workbook which breaks down chapter 10 into more manageable chunks. Students could do the whole thing with whole class/teacher-led, or you could split them off into groups and manage feedback...

I am doing Wilfred Owen's war poetry with my AS English lit group and this is something I am going to use with them as an introduction to the topic in order to get them thinking about war. It contains two sets of extracts, war themed. The class will be split into two groups and each has to present what they have found out from the extracts ALONE. Could also use extracts for lots of other purposes…

A number of introductory resources for Marlowe's Doctor Faustus. I taught this as part of the Year 13 OCR A level spec. I taught it as part of the F663 component for examination. The comparative text used was John Milton's Paradise Lost.

A powerpoint devoted to reading skills and developing personal responses with accompanying resources. Aim is to help students develop inference and empathy skills… good for welsh board candidates sitting an unseen text paper or just to help sharpen up reading skills in general..

I created a vocabulary glossary for the entire novel, containing words that may be unfamiliar to students. They have to find the definitions themselves- a good weekly homework task I think and could be used for spelling tests too... which students enjoy more than you might think!
