This resource uses a text from the old specification foundation reading GCSE papers (2010). It is designed to help students with their reading and translation skills. Students read the texts, then translate in the tables underneath, then complete the task which was originally on the exam papers. The sentences are divided into bitesize chunks in the tables to enable students to read and translate more easily. This is challenging for even the Grade 7-9 students and makes them focus on vocabulary, sentence structure and creating ‘proper’ English sentences from German texts.
Four games to practise personality vocab - they can be adapted for all topics and all languages, however.
Battleships, Connect 4, Slap the board (vocab spread around the slide) and blockbusters.
All instructions for how to play each game are in the notes below the slides.
Students give the possible question to get a nought or a cross on the corresponding square. For example: for Emmanuel Macron, students ask “who is the president of France?”
Great first lesson or end of term activity, good for cultural awareness.
Great first lesson activity. Some facts about Germany. Students give the possible question to get a nought or a cross on the corresponding square. EG: for 'Angela Merkel', students ask "Who is the Chancellor of Germany?"
Add noughts and crosses on interactive whiteboard, or print off copies of the slide and students can play in pairs/small groups
A quick starter with Paris monuments on slide 1. Students can work in small groups to identify the monuments. Ideal if you are taking a trip to Paris!
Good for cultural awareness.
Quick and easy Spanish lesson starters for all levels, but most suitable for beginners. Matching pictures and words, or testing Spanish geography. Olympics sports activity could be easily translated into other languages.
An example of a grade 4-5 (old GCSE grade C-D) piece of writing about 'myself' in French. Students read the text and rewrite it, improving it to a grade 6-7 piece of writing using the hints and tips. Differentiated by outcome. Suitable for higher ability KS3 students.
Some simple questions for students to ask each other as ice-breakers - ideal for the beginning of an A Level course. Can also be used to practice basic questions for GCSE speaking exams (new specification).
