What is it?
This is a simple game for two players to reinforce 2D shape names and the number of sides each shape has.

Who’s it for?
This 2D shape name game has been designed for early years and pupils in years one and two as well as students needing additional learning support.

How to Play
The game includes two boards on page 2, one for each player. Each player should write their name on the line at the top.

To play, you will need one die and either a pen/pencil or the included counters.

Instructions:

  • Players can use a pen or pencil to tick off the shapes they roll on the die.
  • Alternatively, they can cut out and use the game counters (included) to cover the shapes as they are rolled.
  • We recommend using a single die to encourage players to take turns and share.

Clear instructions are provided on page 1, which players can read themselves before starting the game.

What’s needed?
One die to share or one dice each and a pencil each/game ‘counters’ - cut up (included).

Resource layout
Instructions are included on page 1, the game itself (x2 game boards) are included on page 2.

Recommendations

  • Provide physical ‘reference’ shapes (included): For younger players, having a set of physical 2D shapes available during the game is helpful. They can look at, hold, and count the sides of each shape.

  • Increase durability: To make the game reusable and more durable, you can laminate the game boards and use a dry-wipe pen.

  • Use chunky dice: For younger learners, chunky foam dice are much easier to handle and are quieter than standard dice.

  • Prevent lost dice: To stop the die from rolling away and interrupting the game, use a shallow box such as a cereal box (ideally lined with felt - to help absorb sound) to roll it into.
