A good way of encouraging independence is the token idea. I use this is practical lessons. If the pupils want advice off me they have to cash in their token, encouraging them to use the 3B4ME rule. In place for the 3B4ME rule is an enable table at the front of the classroom, flow charts in booklets, peer help, wall displays, PowerPoints etc. At the end of the lesson the pupils who still have their token put it into a hat and I pick out a winner for a ‘prize’ (commo/merit/sweet?). Simple but it has really changed the dynamics in my practical lessons!
