Layout of the lesson
•Recall task on the GCSE content of the names of the leaf tissues, their locations and adaptations
•Using a microscopy method recap from GCSE - students are given a poor method and identify the mistakes - this will also teach students good technique
•How to use a graticule incl how to calibrate it then how to use it’s calibration to find the length of objects on a micrograph - followed by student task where they can practice this.
•Students write a risk assessment for the upcoming practical
•Students identify which of 2 examples is a correct scientific drawing and then start building ideas of what makes a good scientific drawing - students can then practice this with example pictures
•Method on how to conduct microscopy on leaf tissues- this is intentionally written not to be reproducible so students can write their own better methods in their coursework
• Guide slide on data analysis for what needs to be included and instructions on how to draw a scientific drawing
•Evaluation guides with prompts to support students in writing and in-depth evaluation. It is wise to encourage students to think about their own experiences during the practical for where issues may have arisen and how these could be resolved in the future
PRINTING REQUIREMENTS - copy of drawing reference images 1 per student or student pair + graticule calculation examples 1 per student or student page/ 6 on a sheet - both prints out can be retained and reused
