My thanks to an earlier contributor for the core idea. An activity to allow students in KS3 & 4 to test their substitution skills. Each substitution gives a numerical answer, which is then translated into a letter using the code grid. 4 sets of substitutions proivde clues to the identity of a famous person.

Great for my extension group - they needed to keep their wits about them.

I really like this activity. The substitutions can get quite challenging and it allows an opportunity for students to use calculators effectively (teacher permitting), as even with a calculator students can type things in incorrectly. Also, the answer isn't cheesy or obvious and brings in other subjects. Also, lots of scope for students to come up with their own 'who am I?' questions.
