This PowerPoint enables students to visualise a difficult concept by showing how the conduction electrons in an isolated metallic sphere respond when a negatively charged rod is brought close and then the sphere is momentarily earthed.
This process is repeated with a positively charged rod.
Lastly, a real life example of charging by induction in the form of how a negatively charged storm cloud passing above a tree induces a temporary positive charge on it.
It emphasises how it is only the conduction electrons that move and each part of the induction process is shown step by step.
