Diary Entry: Life in a Victorian Workhouse

This task invites students to write a diary entry from the perspective of a Victorian workhouse resident. It is perfect for last-minute or cover lessons.

Overview:

The lesson begins with an explanation of Victorian workhouses, followed by a short 10-minute video clip that gives students a visual understanding of the harsh conditions. Students mind-map the key aspects of life in a workhouse.

Students are introduced to the diary entry task. A mini-example provided to help guide them. Sentence starters will also be available to support their writing process. Peer feedback task at the end.
