Rather than the obvious critical approaches (Marxism/Feminism etc.) I used this to get students to apply the far more interesting and arguably more relevant principles of the philosophy of ‘Death Denial’.
As an examiner myself - it would really impress me if a student analysed dystopia - especially 1984 - through the lens of this critical approach.
Used it last week with year 13 and they really took to it and it made their essays sound very sophisticated.
Attached is an overview of the philodophy and the worksheet for them to apply.
Also used with year 12 - I blew these up to A3 , for an obs lesson - each group applied one strand, then they did a carousel around the room, adding to each strand worked excellently.
