This IB Maths AI SL 2.3 resource introduces graphing functions from tables, contexts, and technology, and is fully aligned with the IB Applications and Interpretation SL syllabus.
Students learn how a graph represents the relationship between the input and output of a function. The notes begin by showing how values from a table can be written as ordered pairs, plotted on coordinate axes, and connected carefully to reveal the shape and key features of a function.
The resource develops students’ understanding of the difference between the IB command terms “draw” and “sketch.” Students learn when a graph should be drawn accurately using a scale and plotted points, and when a sketch should focus on the main shape, intercepts, turning points, asymptotes, and other identifying features.
A contextual example models the path of a football using a quadratic function. Students practise finding x-intercepts, identifying the maximum point, choosing an appropriate scale, and drawing the graph in a way that matches the real-world context.
The notes also introduce graphing with technology, including using a graphing calculator or graphing software to draw functions accurately. Students are encouraged to identify important features before relying on technology, helping them connect calculator output with mathematical reasoning.
The resource finishes with sum and difference of functions, using exponential and logarithmic functions as examples. Students sketch individual functions, use technology to draw the combined function accurately, and record key features such as domain, intercepts, asymptotes, and turning points.
Ideal for IB Maths AI SL teachers teaching graphing functions, ordered pairs, draw vs sketch command terms, contextual graphs, technology-based graphing, and sums and differences of functions.
