IGCSE Physics: Core Practical: Magnetic Field Patterns | Magnetism & Electromagnetism | Unit 7 | L2
This lesson covers spec point 7.6 of the Edexcel Modular IGCSE Physics specification — using iron filings and a plotting compass to map magnetic
field patterns around bar magnets in different configurations.
PowerPoint includes:
• Retrieval starter reviewing field line rules and field patterns from L1
• Direct Instruction (I Do) — iron filings method explained with safety precautions; plotting
compass method explained step by step; the four configurations introduced: single bar magnet,
N–S attraction, N–N repulsion, S–S repulsion; expected observations described for each
• Guided Practice (We Do) — students predict and sketch the field pattern for N–S before
carrying out the practical; class discussion of results; plotting compass method
demonstrated live or via video
• Check for Understanding — 3 MCQs on method choice, field line interpretation and
sources of error
• Independent Practice (You Do) — practical activity sheet
• Review and Reflect — exit ticket comparing the two methods
Activity Sheet includes:
• Two separate method sections (iron filings and plotting compass), each followed by a
full-width observation drawing box for students to record their results
• 2×2 grid of diagram boxes covering all four configurations: single bar magnet,
N–S attraction, N–N repulsion, S–S repulsion
• 5 analysis questions (20 marks) comparing results from both methods, identifying the
advantages of each, and explaining how field line spacing relates to field strength
• Stretch question asking students to explain why the plotting compass method is more
useful for tracing field direction than iron filings
• Full mark scheme for teacher use
