IGCSE Physics: Reducing Heat Loss | Edexcel Modular | Unit 3 | L7
This lesson covers spec point 3.10 — explaining ways of reducing unwanted
energy transfer through insulation and other methods, and linking each method
to conduction, convection and radiation.
PowerPoint includes:
• Retrieval starter reviewing thermal energy transfer methods from L3–L5
• Direct Instruction (I Do) — five insulation methods introduced: loft
insulation, cavity wall insulation, double glazing, draught excluders and
reflective foil; each explained in terms of the transfer method it reduces;
vacuum gap in double glazing contrasted with air gap; survival blanket used
to draw all three methods together
• Guided Practice (We Do) — three contextualised problems: calculate rate of
energy loss reduction after installing loft insulation; explain why foam-
filled cavity walls are more effective than empty cavities; evaluate the best
insulation method for a house in Qatar
• Independent Practice (You Do) — activity sheet with exam-style questions
• Review and Reflect — MCQs and exit ticket
Activity Sheet includes:
• 9 exam-style questions covering all five insulation methods, linking each
to the correct transfer mechanism, a rate of energy loss calculation and
real-life contexts including vacuum flasks, wetsuits and a Qatar home
• Ends with an evaluate question requiring students to justify the most
suitable insulation method for Qatar’s climate
• Full mark scheme for teacher use
