After 2s, 10s are the next one to learn. Here are flash cards (colour & b&w) you can print to show students 10 groups of numbers and then 9 groups as 10 groups - 1 group (the idea that skip counting - additive thinking is too hard so it's easier to learn that 10 sevens is 7 tens) and then verbally extend the strategy to 9 groups of any number.





Also written as words ie 10 groups of ... (from 1 to 20). For example of you ask students 10 groups of 13, you are then able to show that this can be made up of 10 groups of 10 + 10 groups of 3 or 130.
