This engaging Macbeth Context Masterclass is designed to strengthen students’ understanding of the historical, social and political influences behind Shakespeare’s tragedy while developing the skills needed to apply context effectively in exam responses. Through focused activities, students revise the key contextual ideas linked to kingship, the supernatural, gender expectations, religion, and Jacobean society, before exploring how these shaped Shakespeare’s choices as a writer. The lesson also supports students in embedding contextual knowledge naturally into analytical writing rather than simply “bolting it on.” Included is a printable worksheet to guide learning, encourage active revision and support independent study or classroom use, specifically asking students to link context and quotes.
