This is a bundle of resources designed to support the teaching of the brilliant Oliver Jeffers book “Meanwhile Back on Earth”.

This is an imaginative book in which a father takes his two squabbling children on a journey through the solar system to teach them about the futility of conflict. He shows them people fighting over land throughout the ages, through a child’s eyes.

This bundle of resources includes:

  • An all-inclusive writing assessment task, designed to assess students’ informative writing skills. This includes a research component and a composition component, whereby students research an element of the solar system to produce an informative brochure.
  • An informative writing rubric which can be used in a range of classroom settings, designed both to support your students through the writing process, and to make the assessing and feedback cycle easier.
  • A range of brochure templates to allow for student choice, which can also be used for all your future informative writing tasks. Simply choose the best template, print and go!
  • A range of ten full-colour literature circle task cards. These can be printed and laminated for future use, or displayed on a shared screen. Tasks are designed to be completely independent with a high degree of student choice to allow for maximum classroom engagement.
  • All associated printables linked to Literature Circle tasks. Again, these can be adapted to a range of tasks.
  • A vocabulary booster, to support the development of language skills and word detection in your classroom. This is linked to the text, and requires students to decode word meanings in context, before incorporating these into their own work.
  • A detailed comprehension guide, which can be used in whole class or small-group settings. This guide targets a range of comprehension skills, from literal and inferential, to author purpose, text-to-self and more! This can be printed for students to complete independently, or used as a teacher guide for discussion prompts in shared reading settings.

I have many other literature-based resources in my store, so feel free to check them out.

Happy reading!
