This 50–60 minute Biology lesson introduces light microscopes and slide preparation in a clear, structured, and SEN-friendly way.

Created for students in an SEN Secondary School (Autism provision), with scaffolded practical guidance, retrieval practice, and accessible biological examples to support lower-attaining learners.

Lesson Structure:
Starter – What could we see? Students discuss what structures might be visible under a light microscope.

Career Link – Forensic Scientist

Hook – Demodex Face Mites

Explicit Teaching – What is a Light Microscope? Students learn what microscopes do, how lenses magnify objects, a brief history of microscopes and
why microscopes are essential in biology

Students identify the parts and function of the light microscope via teacher demonstration.

Students complete scaffolded retrieval activities including: microscope labelling,
matching microscope parts to functions, fill-in-the-gap sequencing.

How to Prepare a Slide: Students learn the correct method for preparing a biological specimen slide [onion]. Students order the steps for preparing a microscope slide and match key equipment to its purpose.

Independent Task: Students apply their understanding through structured worksheet activities.

Plenary – Retrieval: Students identify incorrect microscope labels and explain microscope function as a final check for understanding.

Includes:
Fully resourced PowerPoint
Worksheets included at the start for easy printing - slides 1 to 3
Answer slides included
Career link included
Regular checking for understanding
SEN-friendly scaffolded practical learning
Engaging biological hook (Demodex mites)

Perfect for KS3 Biology, GCSE microscopy introduction, SEN classrooms, intervention, lower-attaining learners, and cover lessons.
