In the eyes of country sports followers, driven grouse shooting is the supreme challenge, the most blissful joy. To its foes, however, it represents all manner of things they recoil from: they believe that they see simply rich men in antique fancy dress killing wild creatures for their amusement, in a setting that should properly be the playground of raptors and hillwalkers.

The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) seeks to use scientific research to demonstrate that what urban visitors perceive as wildernesses in a state of grace are, in truth, landscapes that demand expensive management for the benefit of all wildlife.

This report has been prepared to clarify just how much is, and is not, known about the sustainable management of our uplands. The GWCT, a research and education charity conducting this essential conservation science, is well placed to help inform this debate.

This resource presents the full report, essential research material for students of environmental, land management and countryside studies.
