Working Systematically, Patterns
Key Stage: 2 ★★★

How many children can have ice cream, if no-one is allowed to choose a combination that contains the complete choice of someone before them?

This investigation offers an opportunity for children to work creatively, as there is no obvious place to start. However, it may well give you chance to discuss systematic approaches once they have been working on it for a while.

This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.

A good upper KS2 problem from nrich. I like the way they provide good resources that can be used for any part of the lesson and also provide you with hints that would help children to answer them (in case I give out too much information and do the work for them!)
