In this guided inquiry online lab your students will investigate the physical properties of a material that determine its density. By the end of this online lab your students will be able to (1) determine the volume of an object using the displacement method, (2) calculate the density of an object, (3) explain how changing the mass or volume of an object affects its density, (4) explain why an object floats or sinks in a liquid and (5) determine the relative density of objects from their masses and volumes.

This online lab is intended to be used with the Density (HTML5) Simulation from PhET Interactive Simulations. The link for the simulation can be found inside the resource.

PhET Interactive Simulations incorporate research based, student centered activities that are fun and easy to use. All of the PhET simulations are available from their website: PhET Interactive Simulations. This PhET online simulation can be done in the classroom or during distance learning.
