Phonics Phase 2 s a t p i n Word puzzles

Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as students needing additional learning support.

What’s it for?
This ‘Phase 2’ phonics practise activity set (1) has been designed to be a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate knowledge of the first set of letters/sounds introduced. This activity is ideal for groups to be getting on with independently.

How to use it?
The adult can pre-cut the x9 rectangular shaped puzzles - pages 1 and 2 (grey dotted lines guide where to cut) to separate them from each other. The adult can also cut the red dotted lines to separate the segments of each puzzle itself. The segments of all x9 ‘picture/word puzzles’ can then be placed on a table top (shuffled) for learners to complete.

Picture/word puzzles
Each learner needs to match up the segments of each picture/word puzzle to complete the x9 pictures and words - all words on the ‘picture/word’ puzzles are made using only the ‘s a t p i n’ letters/sounds. Once the puzzles are complete learners can use these as a reference to complete the x9 sentences (pages 3-6).

Extension/follow-on sentences…
There are two versions of the same x9 sentences to complete. A larger format (pages 3 and 4) which can be cut up (perhaps laminated) and written on (if laminated - with a dry wipe/wipe clean pen). The smaller scale version (page 5) has the same x9 sentences but ‘all on one page’ for learners to complete with a pencil, as a ‘worksheet’. Answers are included on page 6 in the same format which learners can use for quick, easy reference.

Resource Details…
As mentioned the words on the ‘picture/word puzzles’ only use the letters s, a, t, p, i, n.

The sentences include high frequency words ‘a’, ‘the’, ‘this’, ‘is’, you’, ’we’, ‘can’.

The sentences also include the word ‘wear’ (not common) and ‘crocodile’ (with an image of a crocodile directly above this word), ’scissors’ (with an image of scissors directly above this word), ’globe’ (with an image of a globe directly above this word) and ’cat’ (with an image of a cat directly above this word).

The sentences included are -

• ‘A crocodile can _ _ _ _’. (snap)
• ‘We wear _ _ _ _ _ ‘. (pants)
• ‘Scissors can _ _ _ _ ‘. (snip)
• ‘The cat is _ _ _ ‘. (sat)
• ‘You can _ _ _ _ ‘ a globe. (spin)
• ‘This is a _ _ _’. (tin)
• ‘A cat can _ _ _ ‘. (sit)
• ‘This is a _ _ _ ‘. (pin)
• ‘This is a _ _ _’. (pan)
