Build reading stamina one week at a time with seven Year 6 reading texts for Spring 1 (one for every week of the half term.)
Each text is designed to be read, and its questions answered, in a single 20 -minute session. That is exactly the challenge pupils face in the SATs reading test, so regular practice helps them get used to reading a full-length text at pace and still leaving time to answer the questions. The texts run from approximately 220 to 580 words.
What’s included:
• 7 reading texts (one per week), each a different text type: fiction, poetry and non-fiction
• 7 question sheets – 12 questions and 15 marks per text, with space for name, date and score
• 7 teacher mark schemes with answers, accepted alternatives and a mark-band guide
• Editable Word format
Texts included
1 The Last Library on Mars (Fiction - science fiction)
2 The Lighthouse Keeper (Poetry - narrative poem)
3 Shackleton and the Endurance (Non-fiction - biography / recount)
4 Should Zoos Exist? (Non-fiction - discussion)
5 Ode to My Trainers (Poetry - comic poem)
6 The Riddle of Hollow House (Fiction - mystery)
7 Grandma’s Kitchen (Poetry)
Every sheet follows the same SATs-style format, so pupils know what to expect each week: word meaning in context (3 questions), retrieving information (4 questions), summarising or sequencing (1 question) and inference with evidence from the text (4 questions). Question styles include tick, circle, find and copy, true/false grids, ordering and short written answers worth up to 2 marks. Each answer in the mark scheme is labelled with its reading content domain, so you can quickly see which skills need more work.
How to use
Perfect for a weekly timed reading session with the whole class, and equally useful for small groups, interventions and SATs practice.
