Complete “Ready to go” lesson with no adapting necessary!
New for AAQ Pearson Applied Science BTEC from Sept 2025 Specification
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
This lesson covers:
•Introduction and recap of what refraction using analogy and with animated labelled diagram of how light refracts through a glass block - opportunity for a fun engaging demo in the introduction but alternatively I have embedded a video alternative
•How to calculate refractive index using n = c/v followed by example and practice
•How to calculate refractive index using n = sin i/ sin r followed by example and practice through a short practical where students measure the angle of refraction at different angles of incident. I have provided example practical results so alternatively, students could be given the table with the angle results in and the sin i, sin r and refractive index columns blank
•Linking both equations to obtain c/v = sin i/sin r followed by example and practice
•Short practical where students explore how light refracts in a semi-circular block to discover the link between angle of incidence and refraction as you go from a denser medium to a less dense medium as well as critical angle and total internal reflection
•Content follows the practical covering the link between angle of incidence and refraction as you go from a denser medium to a less dense medium as well as critical angle and total internal reflection.
•How to calculate critical angle using sin C = 1/n followed by example and practice

NO PRINTING REQUIREMENTS

AAQ Pearson Applied Science- 3A: Understanding waves and optical fibres

New for the AAQ Pearson Applied Science BTEC - teaching starting from 2025 A bundle containing the full specification of content for the topic A: Understanding waves and optical fibres in Unit 3: Principle and Application of Physics The lesson order is as follows: • Wave Properties (27 slides) • Phase difference and Superposition (20 slides) • Diffraction Gratings and Emission Spectra (22 slides) • Stationary Waves (25 slides) • Refraction and Total Internal Reflection (22 slides) • Optical fibres, Analogue and Digital signals (24 slides + worksheet) • Electromagnetic Waves and the Inverse Square Law (20 slides) • Electromagnetic Waves in communication (18 slides) A total of over 170 slides worth of content! All lessons follow a similar structure and design with: • Learning objectives and specification link • Recall starter activity with answers based on previous lesson • Explanation slides with clear concise diagrams - chunked in an easy to understand format • Variety of practice activities including exam questions, gap fills, differentiated questions etc. • Answers for all questions • All easily editable to adapt to your teaching or to use in existing lessons although all lessons are ready to go • Minimal printing - I understand how limited printing budgets are so printing is mostly restricted to small diagrams and reusable fact sheets. • The occasional fun and interesting fact.
