Two maths starter activities with their teaching plans in this free 10-page sample from Starter Activities for Maths Lessons in Year 8.

Problem-solving Words is a vocabulary quiz using words with missing vowels, with points for spelling and definitions. Problem-solving 5-4-3-2-1 uses group question rounds to explore mathematical vocabulary and problem-solving, with answers and an extension suggestion.

Both activities can be taught using a board and pupils’ paper or show-me boards. Their plans explicitly require no separate resource page. The sample also includes the title, introduction, contents, general guidelines and lesson-plan section pages.

The full 87-page PDF contains 40 starters with teaching plans and supporting card resources across problem-solving, number, calculation, algebra, shape and measures, and handling data.

The preview images illustrate the full pack and include pages beyond this sample. Original 2002 National Numeracy Strategy and Framework references are retained without a claim of current alignment.
