This engaging GCSE English Language lesson uses an extract from the pilot episode script of Stranger Things to develop students’ skills in language and structural analysis. The lesson is ideal for AQA English Language Paper 1, but can be easily adapted for other exam boards.
Students explore how writers create tension, atmosphere, and contrast through setting, imagery, dialogue, and structural shifts. The extract moves from a dark, mysterious scientific setting to a familiar suburban environment, allowing students to analyse how juxtaposition and foreshadowing are used to hook the audience.
The lesson encourages close reading of a screenplay form, helping students understand how descriptive language, sound, and stage directions contribute to meaning, mood, and reader response. Popular culture is used to increase engagement while maintaining clear exam focus.
